The 2009 World Canals Conference will be held in Novi Sad, the principal city of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the second largest city in Serbia. Vojvodina is situated in the north of Serbia, in the Pannonian Plain, surrounded with three navigable rivers, the Danube, the Tisa and the Sava.

Novi Sad lies on the bank of the Danube River, 80 km west from Belgrade. It is an important cultural and administrative centre and visitors are mostly charmed by its relaxed way of living. In the town centre guests can see many objects significant for history of Vojvodina and Serbia, as the oldest national theatre, churches of all confessions, City hall, and other old buildings. Near town centre, on the bank of the Danube River is situated famous Petrovaradin Fortress from 18th century, one of the most preserved fortification objects in this part of Europe. Fruska Gora is near Novi Sad, the highest mountain of this part of Panionian Plain, famous for its many monasteries.

Delicious food and quality wines are a spice of every visit to Vojvodina and unique experience for guests from all over the world. Traditional dishes in Vojvodina are a result of mixture of gastronomy of different nations which live there, and influences between Serbian, German, Hungary, Romanian and other cuisines. The culture of making wine is thousands years long in Serbia, and Vojvodina is widely known by quality of domestic wine.
